I was commissioned by Out Magazine to do an illustration about poet, Jonathan Galassi. The article was entitled Crossing Over, and was about a collection of poems just published chronicling his struggles with his own sexuality. "Jonathan Galassi took a long time to come to terms with being gay. A volume of heart-wrenching poems charts his journey." Though this was supposed to be a portrait of the poet, I chose to only represent the negative shape- he is surrounded by beauty but cannot be present in it, though a flower is beginning to bloom in his lapel.
This illustration was accepted into the 2012 Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition.
